Pishwas: all the flare, none of the fuss

A pishwas (peshwas) is the Mughal court frock: one floor-length piece, fitted through the bodice, then flaring from a high waist in many panels (kalis), often open down the front. It gives you a lehenga's movement without a separate skirt and blouse, and it photographs beautifully.

Good for the nikkah and walima, and for the barat when you want presence without a heavy lehenga.

Questions people ask

What is a pishwas?

A floor-length, one-piece frock, fitted at the bodice and flaring from a high waist in panels (kalis), often front-open, worn with churidar or a light skirt beneath and a dupatta. Pishwas and peshwas are the same word; an anarkali is a close cousin that's closed and flares from just under the bust.

Is a pishwas the same as a frock with a lehenga?

No. A calf-length frock or long shirt worn over a separate lehenga is a lehenga set. A pishwas is itself floor-length and is the whole outfit.

Which function suits a pishwas?

Nikkah and walima most naturally; a heavily worked pishwas also works for the barat.
